I've been an Amazon Prime member for at least four years. In the beginning I joined to save on shipping fees during the holiday season, but soon after Amazon offered up a selection of Instant Video to Prime members at no additional cost. While the selection is not as broad as Netflix, Amazon has made a number of deals with smaller studios to bring smaller non-mainstream films to new audiences. I like this, since it encourages you to watch something that you may have never heard of before.
Though hidden within the guts of Amazon's recommendation system (almost like an Easter Egg), you can view a listing of instant videos you've watched, fifteen videos per page, in reverse chronological order.
Over the last four years I've discovered a variety of films I'd never heard of via traditional marketing channels. Often the product of filmmakers who took risks with regard to content or marketing, without much care for what the masses would think, I see many films not getting the credit they are due. Those with the patience to indulge are rewarded by crisp writing, witty dialogue, fascinating cinematography, quirky plots, clever production design, interesting portrayals, and sheer goofiness (although not usually together).
In no particular order, with links to Amazon Instant Video so that films can be easily placed on your watchlist:
And there's six documentaries here too, just because. They usually aren't my cup of tea, but every once in a while one strikes my fancy.
At the time of publication, all of these ought to be included as part of Prime Instant Video.
